Russia’s war against Ukraine

Zelensky, Trudeau discuss security in first call of 2024. The Ukrainian leader informed Trudeau about Russia’s attacks on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day which targeted several regions across Ukraine.

Putin promises to intensify attacks on Ukraine in response to Belgorod strike. “(The Ukrainians) want to scare us and create uncertainty within our country,” he said during a visit to a military hospital. “We will intensify attacks. No crime against civilians will remain unpunished.”

Ukraine downs 9 of 10 Russian drones, 1 missile on New Year’s Day. Ukraine downed nine of the 10 Shahed drones and one Kh-59 missile launched by Russia in the afternoon of Jan. 1, the Air Force reported.

Governor: Russian drone debris damages homes in Kyiv Oblast. Debris from intercepted Russian drones damaged four homes and four cars in Kyiv Oblast on Jan. 1, regional governor Ruslan Kravchenko reported. No casualties were reported.

Explosions reported in Kyiv, Kharkiv amid Russia’s mass attack. Numerous explosions were heard in Kyiv the morning of Jan. 2, Mayor Vitalii Klitschko reported, amid Russia’s latest mass attack on Ukraine. Ukraine’s Air Force issued an aerial threat warning for all Ukrainian oblasts.

Drone strike in Lviv leaves museum on fire. Falling debris from a Russian drone in Lviv on Jan. 1 left a local museum dedicated to historical figure Roman Shukhevych on fire, local officials said.

Pope calls to pray for ‘martyred Ukrainian people.’ “Let us not cease to pray for the peoples who suffer from wars: for the martyred Ukrainian people, for the Palestinian and Israeli peoples, for the people of Sudan and for many others,” Pope Francis said on Dec. 31 in the Vatican.

Two U.S. citizens came to Kyiv in early December as self-funded volunteers, to spend time performing music and entertaining Ukrainian children in schools and kindergartens, and performing for Ukrainian soldiers in hospitals.

Mediazona confirms identities of over 40,000 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine. Through open source research, Mediazona, a Russian independent media outlet, together with BBC Russia, confirmed the names of 40,599 Russian soldiers who had been killed since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Death toll from Dec. 29 strikes on Kyiv rises to 29 as more bodies pulled from rubble. At least 29 people were killed by Russia’s Dec. 29 mass strike on the capital, according to Serhii Popko, who heads the Kyiv City Military Administration.

Russian drone kills 2 civilians in Sumy Oblast. At least two civilians died of injuries after a Russian Shahed drone hit a two-story residential building in Sumy Oblast on Jan. 1, according to the regional military administration and the regional police.

Russian shelling kills civilian in Kharkiv Oblast. One man was reported killed by fragments. Artillery and Uragan rockets struck residential areas, including a five-story building. Authorities also posted images of what looked like damaged private homes.

Russian attacks on Kherson Oblast kill 1, injure 4. Russian attacks on Kherson Oblast earlier on Jan. 1 have killed one person and injured four, the State Emergency Service reported.

Shelling in Donetsk Oblast kills 65-year-old man. Russian shelling of Pivdenne village in Donetsk Oblast’s Toretsk Community killed one 65-year-old man on Jan. 1, according to the regional military administration.

International response

Norway permits weapons, defense equipment sales to Ukraine. Norwegian companies will now be able to directly sell weapons and defense equipment to Ukrainian authorities following a decision from Oslo, Norway’s Defense Ministry announced on Jan. 1.
