Russia’s war against Ukraine

Air Force: Russia to launch record number of Shahed drones this fall, winter. Yuri Ihnat, the Air Force’s spokesperson, pointed out that Russian forces launched over 500 Shahed drones in attacks against Ukraine in September alone. “In the six months of the last heating season, Russia launched over 1,000 Shaheds against Ukraine. We already had half of that number in just one month,” Ihnat noted.

General Staff: Ukraine repels Russian attacks in 5 directions. Ukrainian forces repelled Russian attacks in the Kupiansk, Bakhmut, Lyman, Avdiivka, and Marinka directions over the course of Oct. 8, the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces reported.

Russia pursues UN Human Rights Panel seat after ejection over Ukraine war. Russia, expelled from the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2022, seeks to rejoin the Geneva-based body, defying Western nations’ efforts to isolate the country over its invasion of Ukraine.

Duda: No diplomatic conflict between Poland, Ukraine. Poland’s head of state, however, emphasized that when it comes to relation to Kyiv, Polish interest would always take priority.

Think tank: Increased rail traffic at North Korean-Russian border suggests military transfers. Satellite imagery of North Korea’s Tumangang Rail Facility at Russia’s border captured on Oct. 5 revealed an unprecedented number of freight railcars, totaling up to 73, as well as a large number of shipping containers and equipment, the report said.

Duda: Hamas attack ‘diverts world’s attention’ from Ukraine. Polish President Andrzej Duda believes the extremist group Hamas’ attack on Israel will contribute to Russia’s war in Ukraine as it will draw away attention from the conflict, he said on Polish television.

Media: 1 in 5 Europe-based Russian spies located in Switzerland. Switzerland is increasingly becoming a base for Russia’s secret services, with about 80 Russian spies in the country, according to an investigation by Swiss newspaper Neue Zurcher Zeitung.

Embassy: 2 Ukrainians killed in Israel attacks. Two Ukrainian citizens have been killed in Israel after extremist organization Hamas launched rocket and ground attacks from the Gaza Strip on Oct. 7, the Ukrainian embassy in Israel told news agency Interfax-Ukraine on Oct. 8.

Russian strike on Kherson outskirts kills man. The man suffered shrapnel wounds to his torso and died while being rushed to the hospital, Roman Mrochko, the head of the Kherson City Military Administration, said.

Russian strike against Vovchansk in Kharkiv Oblast kills civilian. A Russian strike against Vovchansk in Kharkiv Oblast’s Chuhuiv district killed a 65-year-old woman, Governor Oleh Syniehubov reported.

Russian shelling injures child in Kherson Oblast. A Russian attack on the village of Kindyika in Kherson Oblast injured an 11-year-old girl on Oct. 8, Kherson Governor Oleksandr Prokudin reported.

Russia fires missile at Donetsk Oblast’s Kostiantynivka, injures 4, including child. Russian troops attacked the city with an Iskander cruise missile, damaging some 30 buildings, most of them residential.

Attack on Israel

Zelensky: Over 100 Ukrainians seek assistance at embassy in Israel. President Volodymyr Zelensky reminded that two Ukrainian citizens have been killed in the hostilities. He appealed to Ukrainians in Israel to follow instructions of the local security services.

Zelensky and other leaders call Netanyahu over war in Israel. President Volodymyr Zelensky noted “the cooperation between the Israeli police and Ukrainian diplomats with regard to the safety and protection of Ukrainian citizens in Israel” after a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Oct. 8.

US sends carrier strike group to Middle East in response to attacks on Israel. “Today, in response to this Hamas attack on Israel, and following detailed discussions with President Biden, I have directed several steps to strengthen Department of Defense posture in the region to bolster regional deterrence efforts,” U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said.

UN Security Council holds emergency meeting following attack on Israel. Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan appealed to the Security Council to condemn the “ruthless terror” attacks conducted by Hamas. “Hamas’ war crimes must be unequivocally condemned. This unimaginable atrocity must be condemned. Israel must be given steadfast support to defend ourselves,” Erdan told reporters ahead of the Security Council meeting in New York.
