Eu queria começar esta postagem com os significados de dicionário de feminilidade e de masculinidade. Enquanto consegui achar para a primeira palavra algumas definições que eram justamente o que eu procurava (variações de "coisas relacionadas com ser mulher"), eu só consegui achar definições mais indiretas em relação à masculinidade (o que significa que eu teria que puxar mais verbetes para também explicar o que queriam dizer com virilidade ou com masculino para chegar em uma definição paralela à de feminilidade). Enfim.
O que está em questão aqui é que estes termos podem ser vistos de duas formas:
-
Ser uma pessoa feminina ou masculina significa se dizer ao menos "meio mulher" ou "meio homem", respectivamente;
-
Ser uma pessoa feminina ou masculina significa aderir a arquétipos relacionados a estereótipos de gêneros binários.
Alguns exemplos práticos:
-
Se apenas a forma 1 for estritamente seguida, pessoas que são mulheres NB, demimeninas ou de qualquer gênero relacionado a ser mulher são fundamentalmente pessoas femininas. Isso não significa que devem seguir qualquer estereótipo ou assumir qualquer papel de gênero; segundo a forma 1, feminilidade só significa ter alguma relação com ser mulher.

Se apenas a forma 2 for estritamente seguida, feminilidade e masculinidade são conceitos completamente separados de gêneros binários por si só. Alguém que é 100% homem pode se considerar uma pessoa feminina caso se identifique com uma série de arquétipos. Um gênero pode ser relacionado com feminilidade e ser completamente não relacionado com o gênero mulher. Estas coisas não são possíveis se apenas o modelo 1 for estritamente seguido.
Neste texto, eu pretendo falar sobre como estas duas formas de ver feminilidade e masculinidade afetaram e afetam a comunidade não-binária e qualquer pessoa que seja inclusiva dela.
Butch e femme

Ultimamente, houveram esforços para apagar que estes termos foram e são usados para pessoas não-binárias, multi ou quaisquer outras que não sejam lésbicas. Então aqui tem algumas fontes sobre a origem e utilização abrangente de tais termos: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]
Como dá pra ver, estes termos foram usados muito antes de pessoas terem palavras para descrever que não são mulheres nem homens.
E talvez nem precisassem; afinal, era ainda mais comum do que agora a visão de que se você fosse aquileane, sáfique, a-espectral, multi, intersexo ou trans, você não era realmente uma pessoa binária, e sim alguém de um gênero binário com características do outro gênero binário (por conta de duaricismo, era presumido que gostar de homens era característica fundamental de ser mulher, e que gostar de mulheres era característica fundamental de ser homem).
Enfim, enquanto certamente existem pessoas heterodissidentes, trans e intersexo que são binárias, é interessante notar que muitas pessoas já descreviam ser femme ou butch de formas que dava a entender que isso eram identidades muito mais voltadas à autopercepção do que a não serem hétero, e que eram identidades muito mais relevantes socialmente do que serem homens ou mulheres.
Muito disso pode ter a ver com como a desobediência de normas de gênero pode pesar bastante na experiência de alguém. Ou com como houve em vários lugares uma cultura de casais sempre serem entre uma pessoa femme e uma pessoa butch do mesmo gênero.
Porém, ao menos algumas pessoas adotaram butch ou femme como identidades de gênero por si só, especialmente quando a ideia de ser trans e genderqueer começou a ser mais espalhada.
Como estas identidades são mais populares ou abrangentes do que outras mais recentes, é relativamente comum ver pessoas dizendo coisas como "este espaço é para mulheres e femmes", dando a entender que femme é uma identidade adjacente a ser mulher. Mas não é à toa que esta atitude é criticada: existem muites butches que estão mais perto de serem mulheres do que de serem homens, e muites femmes que estão mais perto de serem homens do que de serem mulheres.
Esta é a dualidade que apareceu lá no início: algumas pessoas acham que feminilidade tem a ver com ser mulher, e outras veem feminilidade como uma característica que pessoas podem ter não importa a identidade de gênero.
Butch e femme aparecem em algumas listas de identidades não-binárias; especialmente as mais antigas. Espectometria Não-Binária definia a identidade de gênero butch como hipermasculina e relacionada com a masculinidade tradicional, e a identidade de gênero femme como hiperfeminina e relacionada com a feminilidade tradicional.
Eu diria que a feminilidade e a masculinidade dos termos femme e butch está mais para a visão 2 (relação com arquétipos) do que para a visão 1 (relação com gêneros binários). Mas eu não acho que isso tenha apagado totalmente a visão 1, por conta de identidades que vêm depois...
Pessoa não-binária feminina/feminina de centro/masculina/masculina de centro
O termo não-binárie começou a se popularizar por 2010, substituindo genderqueer quase totalmente uns anos mais tarde.
É meio difícil pesquisar por informações de quantas ou de por quais motivos pessoas se identificavam como pessoas não-binárias femininas ou masculinas. O que posso dizer é que isso era bem comum na primeira metade da década, e que ficou cada vez menos popular, à medida que termos como homem não-binárie, demigênero, juxera e transmasculine foram surgindo e se popularizando.
Em geral, suponho que a maioria das pessoas se identificando como não-binárias e femininas/masculinas estivessem principalmente se referindo à sua expressão de gênero, ao menos naquele momento. Algumas postagens antigas da época também parecem apontar nesta direção: [1] [2] [3] [4]
Mas mesmo em algumas destas postagens, e em postagens como esta, há sinais de ambiguidade em relação a masculinidade se referir a um gênero relacionado a homem, a uma expressão de gênero ou a um gênero relacionado a esta expressão de gênero (e a mesma coisa substituindo masculinidade por feminilidade e homem por mulher).
Especialmente em conteúdo desta época, também existem menções a espectros de gênero femininos e masculinos, e a identidades como masculine de centro e feminine de centro. Estas identidades parecem ter mais a ver com proximidade a gêneros binários, quando utilizadas para falar de gênero, mas isso é difícil de provar quando conteúdo sobre isso é tão difícil de achar.
Masculine de centro e feminine de centro especificamente aparentam ser identidades mais relacionadas com expressão de gênero, ao menos num contexto mais geral.
Transfeminine e transmasculine
A postagem mais antiga que consigo achar sobre o assunto não é a cunhagem original, mas deve se aproximar de sua definição. Link aqui.
Isso mostra que desde o início, transfeminine cobre mulheres trans, pessoas não-binárias que se identificam com alguma forma de feminilidade e pessoas cuja identidade de gênero é relacionada a ser mulher mesmo que não seja 100% mulher, desde que tais pessoas tenham sido atribuídas o gênero homem ao nascer.
E que transmasculine cobre homens trans, pessoas não-binárias que se identificam com alguma forma de masculinidade e pessoas cuja identidade de gênero é relacionada a ser homem mesmo que não seja 100% homem, desde que tais pessoas tenham sido atribuídas o gênero mulher ao nascer.
Isso é de uma postagem de 2011.
Por algum motivo, outras definições destes termos foram aparecendo com o termo. Algumas pessoas começaram a achar que, por conter feminine/masculine no nome, os termos não se aplicariam a pessoas cuja expressão de gênero não é feminina/masculina. Outras começaram a dizer que são termos apenas para pessoas não-binárias (algo que ainda vejo por um monte de lugares). Outras falam que são termos que servem puramente para descrever a transição física, e não gêneros por si só.
A maioria das postagens problematizando estes termos ou a utilização destes termos como guarda-chuva se baseia nestas definições parciais do que é ser transfeminine ou transmasculine.
Enfim, estes termos, ao menos na postagem de 2011, parecem unir as visões 1 e 2 do que é feminilidade e masculinidade: tanto noneras (pessoas de gênero feminino nada a ver com mulher) quanto femiles (pessoas de gênero mulher nada a ver com feminilidade, e que possuem ao menos algo de masculinidade no gênero) poderiam ser transfeminines, caso não tenham sido designades como mulheres ao nascimento. E tanto mulheres trans butch quanto femme entrariam na definição também. Tudo isso independentemente de transição.
Eu entendo que algumas das pessoas que se encaixam nas definições possam não querer compartilhar estes termos com outras pessoas de experiências totalmente diferentes e até às vezes contrárias às suas, mas os termos em si se encaixam nas duas interpretações de feminilidade/masculinidade.
Homens e mulheres não-bináries
Em geral, estes termos são utilizados por pessoas que se identificam com alguma coisa dos gêneros binários e com não-binaridade.
Por exemplo, este homem não-binário se vê como um homem cujo gênero não é expressado dentro do binário. Esta mulher não-binária relata que mulher é uma boa aproximação de como se sente, e que prefere ser vista como mulher do que como homem, mas rejeita estereótipos do que é ser mulher e de que seu gênero precisa ser binário.
Também vi relatos falando sobre como essas pessoas "sempre vão ser vistas como um gênero binário, então decidem dizer que são do gênero binário que as pessoas presumem/deveriam presumir além de serem não-binárias". Isto pode acontecer em alguns casos, mas com certeza existem outras experiências válidas de ser homem/mulher não-binárie.
Esses termos estão ganhando cada vez mais popularidade nesta década (assim como transmasculine e transfeminine), e, assim, acredito que sejam identidades que pessoas não-binárias que se identificariam como "alguém no espectro de gênero feminino/masculino" (visão 1) estejam adotando com mais frequência.
Eu tenho certeza que já vi casos de pessoas se identificando com feminilidade/masculinidade no sentido de arquétipos e não necessariamente com serem mulheres/homens/próximas disso se identificando como mulheres ou homens não-bináries. Porém, não consigo achar exemplos agora.
Juxera e proxvir
Juxera é um gênero adjacente, mas separado, de mulher. Proxvir é um gênero adjacente, mas separado, de homem. Estes termos foram cunhados por um proxvir que não se sentia confortável em usar demimenino, porque este termo significa que alguém é menino (ainda que parcialmente) e é parcialmente alguma outra coisa.
Pode-se dizer que juxera e proxvir são rótulos mais específicos que poderiam entrar no guarda-chuva de mulher e homem não-binárie, respectivamente.
Existem vários outros termos que significam ter um gênero similar a outro, mas resolvi falar destes aqui porque são... especiais, de certa forma.
Como as duas definições são basicamente as mesmas, eu vou apenas traduzir as definições de proxvir. Aqui está a original:
um gênero relativo a homem, mas que é algo separado e completo por si só. não está fora do espectro de gênero.
E aqui está a definição disponível na gender Wiki:
Proxvir é um gênero masculino similar a menino, mas num plano separado por si só.
Esta definição (e a versão dela aplicada para juxera) aparece em vários lugares. Aqui, masculino provavelmente tem relação com a visão 1 (algo masculino = algo relacionado com homem), mas para pessoas que estão mais acostumadas com a visão 2, esta definição pode parecer errônea ou até ofensiva.
Conclusão
Ambas as definições apresentadas na introdução existem. Porém, quando mais termos começaram a ser cunhados, cada vez mais foi possível que cada pessoa escolhesse o que queria dizer ao se identificar como feminina ou como masculina.
Vários termos não citados foram cunhados com essa ambiguidade, ou a ganharam com o tempo (porque pessoas passaram a resumir parte de suas definições usando feminine ou masculine). Mas cada vez mais aumenta a noção de que feminilidade e masculinidade são termos que não inferem relação com gêneros binários, o que aumenta tensões contra pessoas que querem incluir homens em masculinidade e mulheres em feminilidade.
O que dá pra fazer pra evitar confusão?
Pessoalmente, eu acho que a melhor opção é considerar a visão 2 (feminilidade e masculinidade = coisas relacionadas a arquétipos estereotípicos de mulheres e homens que podem ser aplicadas a pessoas de qualquer gênero) como regra.
Isso porque ela é mais inclusiva de pessoas cujas identidades são femininas/masculinas sem terem a ver com ser mulher/homem, e porque é mais fácil substituir masculine/feminine por relacionade a homens/mulheres do que substituir por relacionade a arquétipos e estereótipos relacionados com ser homem/mulher.
Isso, e pessoas que se identificam como femininas de uma forma que não tem a ver com ser mulher ou como masculinas de uma forma que não tem a ver com ser homem existem há décadas; talvez séculos ou milênios. Não faz sentido tentar anular isso, até porque não é como se essa definição proibísse pessoas de associarem sua feminilidade com ser mulher ou sua masculinidade com ser homem.
Porém, isso não significa que podemos ignorar que estas duas definições existem.
Isso significa não reclamar de pessoas gênero-fae que dizem que de vez em quando são homens não-masculines (afinal suas identidades só excluem masculinidade), e nem de pessoas gênero-fae que dizem que não podem ser homens ou de gêneros relacionados e que este é o ponto de sua identidade.
Isso significa aceitar que existem mulheres não-bináries que se encaixam mais na definição de femigênero do que na de mulher, e que existem melles e femmes que são transmasculines.
Isso significa saber que quando alguém cunha uma identidade masculina ou feminina, isso pode ser interpretado de mais de uma forma. (Mas se você estiver cunhando a identidade, pode ser bom tentar deixar explícito o que você quer dizer com tal identidade ser feminina/masculina.)
Ou seja, pode ser importante também levar em conta o que a definição original queria incluir, ou que tipo de pessoas se incluem em cada rótulo atualmente.
Quero também reforçar que feminilidade e masculinidade estão sendo discutidas aqui como identidade pessoal, e não forçada em alguém. Mesmo que sejam conceitos abrangentes e que podem ser definidos por cada pessoa, não é legal dividir tudo em feminino e masculino.
Não sei o quanto este texto realmente vai atingir seu propósito, mas espero que ao menos ajude algumas pessoas a navegar estes significados.
